Last week, Koen attended The Banking Scene Conference Brussels 2026 at the iconic Tour and Taxis venue, joining more than 450 senior finance professionals for what is widely regarded as Belgium's largest annual banking conference.
This year's theme, "Rethinking Relevance," set a deliberately provocative tone. The question at the heart of the day was not how banks should adapt to change, but whether they are doing enough to remain genuinely relevant in a landscape reshaped by technological acceleration, geopolitical uncertainty, and shifting customer expectations. It was a question that ran through every session, every panel, and every conversation in the networking areas.
The conference ran three dedicated content tracks covering Banking, Payments, and Fraud and Compliance, which meant attendees could tailor their day around their area of focus while still moving freely between the exhibition booths and the central networking zone. The format works precisely because it treats connection as a feature rather than an afterthought.
The discussions that stood out most were those that pushed beyond the familiar headlines. AI and next-generation technologies in core banking received serious, grounded treatment, with speakers moving past the hype to examine implementation realities. Equally compelling were the sessions exploring behavioural science as a driver of customer trust, and the increasingly complex intersection of AML frameworks with digital-first business models. The geopolitical dimension of payments infrastructure also featured prominently, a reflection of how much the industry's context has shifted.
What makes The Banking Scene Conference distinctive is the calibre and seniority of the room. C-level executives, Chief Risk Officers, Chief Digital Officers, and regulators from across Europe were not just speaking from stages but actively participating in the dialogue. The conversations that continued over lunch and through the afternoon were often as substantive as the formal programme.
For anyone tracking the strategic direction of European banking, #TBSCONF26BXL offered a valuable read on where the industry stands and, more importantly, what choices lie ahead.
